WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon will be making what was touted as a “major sports announcement” today at 3:00 p.m. Eastern (2:00 p.m. CT).
The announcement was made on Twitter by Alpha Entertainment, the new investment entity (separate from WWE) that was “established to explore investment opportunities across the sports and entertainment landscapes, including professional football.”
Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com reported on Wednesday evening that WWE’s production team was already working on developing video material designed to promote what is expected to be the announcement of the return of the XFL.
As reported back in late December, McMahon sold $100 million worth of WWE shares and that Alpha Entertainment filed for five new trademarks related to the former XFL on December 16. WWE issued a statement confirming the new Alpha entity.
The report by Johnson indicated Alpha was looking at re-launching the XFL in 2020.
