Following the conclusion of Sunday night’s WWE Payback main event that featured Roman Reigns retaining the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against AJ Styles (a match that was restarted twice and concluding under No DQ, No Count Out rules), a rematch was immediately booked for Extreme Rules in three weeks on May 22.
Shane and Stephanie McMahon, who will now be running Monday Night RAW together going forward per the decision made by Vince McMahon at Payback, agreed to terms on Roman Reigns defending the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against AJ Styles in an Extreme Rules match live on the WWE Network from in Newark, New Jersey.
